A wonderfully candid recounting of writer and performer Nick Ullett’s challenging experience of being part of a 2014 star-studded revival of The Birthday Party in Los Angeles, this show gives a fascinating insight into the theatre rehearsal room at star level. Ullett is a charming raconteur and sets us at ease as he launches into the tale of the eventful months during which he was experiencing a particularly busy time in his career, including auditioning for the revival of Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party and what unfolded once rehearsals began.
Set in Los Angeles at the prestigious Geffen theatre, the revival was to be filled with big name stars, ranging from renowned film director William Friedkin, to actors Steven Berkoff, Tim Roth and Frances Barber. Large parts of the run were sold out well in advance of the production opening. Unfortunately, there were personality clashes, struggles with the production, changes of actors and other challenges which Ullett recounts in a witty and delightfully honest depiction of what happens when everything starts to go awry. It is funny and at times jaw-dropping, to hear what unfolded as Ullett brings alive each character and their foibles.
If you have ever wondered whether actors who are stars are just human beings like the rest of us, or simply how auditions and rehearsal rooms run, then this frank and direct description of The Birthday Party revival and how it all went wrong, is for you. Honest, straightforward and undeniably human in its execution, even if you are not a Pinter fan, this show will make you laugh, gasp and shake your head in wonder: not to be missed.
