With a reach that covers a working-class upbringing in Edinburgh, dealing with poverty and a violent father, and stretches to life as painter and educator in Los Angeles, A Geography of Rain is an ultimately uplifting memoir of a life.

Walking into the space we see a living room set-up, a screen on display and a beautiful triptych of stormy landscapes, setting up a cosy space, but showing a glimpse of the darker elements to come. The paintings are wonderfully atmospheric and as the range of paintings are shown on screen in the background, we see the inspiration for Patricia Hunter McGrath’s work and the journey she has gone on. Jim McGrath’s soundscape is a fitting complement to Hunter McGrath’s painting and storytelling: the music and sounds follow the mood, helping to set the tone for the audience.

Hunter McGrath herself is a welcoming figure and, as she describes her childhood, her escape from that and her journey to new brighter life when she met her (second) husband in the States, what emanates from the stage is love in all its force: a love of family, of self, and of embracing what is the best in life, rather than letting the worst take hold. It is a tale of moving forward and learning from the past, a gentle homage to a life lived with courage, the embodiment of smeddum. While some more movement in the direction may have enhanced the storytelling, this is a story that deserves an audience.
