A gentle, humorous and enlightening look at what Cosmology means (it’s not Astrology – it’s about studying the Universe) and its relevance in the world, this is charmingly presented by Dr Julian Mayers. Using a screen, sound and lecture notes, for anyone interested in science, the stars and the Universe in particular, then this is the show for you.

Dr Mayers introduces how he became interested in the subject and its personal meaning to him. Pay attention to the date he first identified his interest as this will become important. Using quotes from well-known scientists both living and dead, this feels like a contemporary take on the subject, while recognising and respecting those whose work has gone before (to boldly go?). Dr Mayers touches briefly on the fascinating exploration of some current thinking in regard to whether we humans are actually living in a simulation – the simulation hypothesis – think The Matrix but more than that.

Dr Mayers skill lies in his ability to discuss key important scientific phrases and laws, and not make us run for the hills in fear that we will not understand. He is clear that we do not need to understand fully: he pitches his explanations clearly and simply-enough that we get a flavour of the subjects being discussed and what they mean for our current world – or is that worlds… Whether you are an expert in theoretical physics or a novice to the world of space/time, this will be of interest to you.
