It's six years since we first welcomed Alice Russell to the original Trouble residency 'at the Blue Note' (the ill-fated club that ran every Friday night for nine months before the 'great Cowgate fire' put paid to its fortunes). That was her Scottish live debut, alongside Will 'Quantic' Holland (himself already a Trouble favourite at that time). It's been three years since Ms Russell performed with her live band at one of Trouble's Thursday night (Glenfiddich) Independent Mix events at Cabaret Voltaire and it's now two years since she was last in Scotland, at Glasgow's Oran Mor...

This is the lady with one of the best soul voices in the UK, who counts Massive Attack's Daddy G among her most vociferous fans and who has released three inspiring albums, not to mention all her other work with Quantic, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, TM Juke, Bah Samba, Kushti, Massive Attack, The Nextmen and, most recently, Mr Scruff. Flitting like a nightingale on the clubbier fringes of soul, funk and dancefloor jazz, Alice Russell has composed some beautifully sweet songs over the last seven odd years, with a sound that's rooted in the past but still firmly modern, citing influences such as Minnie Ripperton, Eva Cassidy, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin as well as contemporary soul star Jill Scott.

So, it's with unrelenting excitement and anticipation that we welcome her back to Edinburgh now for a show at the city's enchanting Voodoo Rooms, the venue putting the Scottish capital back on the map for top drawer live entertainment in an intimate space. Alice will appear live with a six-piece band, performing songs from her back catalogue for the Tru Thoughts label alongside material from the new album she is releasing herself since parting company with the Brighton imprint.

Her new 'Pot of Gold' album is released on November 24th via Alice's own Little Poppet label.
