Move Over The Commonwealth Games - SWRI Host The Ruralympics

Date: Saturday 2nd February 2008

Location: Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh

Event: Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes, Ruralympics

Forget the Beijing 2008 Olympics, move over Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games, a far more unique although admittedly less strenuous event, will be hosted in Edinburgh this February. As part of their 90th Anniversary celebrations Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes will hold the final of Ruralympics in Meadowbank Stadium. The event will see teams from institutes throughout Scotland come together to compete in activities such as Velcro darts, hula hoop passing, badminton targeting, indoor putting and skittles. This light hearted occasion is part of a series of commemorative events taking place to mark the 90th Anniversary since the first institute was formed in Longniddry, East Lothian. In keeping with the aim of the SWRI, Ruralympics will offer members the opportunity to come together to socialise and develop their interests, taking part in what promises to be an entertaining day of activities.

Spectators are welcome to attend the event to support the competing teams.
