The popular Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh is a vital community cultural centre to attract all ages. The diverse programme changes the small stage and auditorium from a theatre, transforming into a cinema, then a concert hall or a dance stage, from week to week.
In the coming two months you can experience a live performance of the play Skylight direct from the National in London, starring Bill Nighy; see the period thriller, Two Faces of January, and listen to an American Blues Big Band. Eclectic music and culture from around the world comes to the Brunton.
And you can plan a great night out as The Bistro at the Brunton offers a great value, pre-theatre supper. The regularly changing menu reflects the international mix of drama, film and music. Ken and I were seriously impressed by the inventive and artistically presented dishes on a recent visit before seeing a play, The Trials of Oscar Wilde.
The culinary theme was a blend of Spanish and Latin American with the taste of sunshine. I began with Home-made Tomato and Haricot bean soup had a spicy kick, a light appetiser for a summer evening. My dining partner enjoyed two big fat sardines, grilled in olive oil and served with a mixed leaf salad.
I "travelled" from Musselburgh to Madrid for my main course as it were! Seared red Mullet sitting on top of a giant mound of seafood Paella. The fish was Persil white and the rice generously stuffed with mussels, squid and prawns: absolutely delicious. Ken selected the vegetarian Goat's Cheese and Red Pepper Tart, well flavoured with smoked paprika; the crisp and flakey Filo pastry was voted excellent.
With our meal, we shared a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, smooth with fruity berries. We had lingered over our two courses and wine, so no time before curtain up for Dessert. The choice included Creme Caramel with apricots, or Seville orange gateaux.
The Bistro is open all day from breakast - Full Scottish, Bacon rolls, croissants - to morning coffee. Call in for a hearty or light Lunch. Homely favourites such as fish and chips or macaroni cheese; Tortillas filled with BLT or Smoked Salmon; salads and sandwiches. Indulge in Afternoon tea with scones and jam and cakes.
Whether you are visiting the theatre to see a show or not, the Bistro at the Brunton is the place to eat and drink all day.
