Experience le vrai du vrai in an ambience of French authenticity

Stepping up the narrow wooden stairs to the restaurant area of L’Escargot Blanc, there is a real sense of anticipation of experiencing le vrai du vrai – bringing back recollections of French restos where almost perpendicular stairways make no concession to age or fitness.

This is not exactly the case in Queensferry Road, but it gives enough of that ambience to lend further authenticity to the decor of old French adverts and photos in the light and bright dining area. A collection of copper pots, that may or may not have originated in Villedieu des Poeles, where such pots are traditionally produced in France, array the walls and again bring memories of this pretty French town. Of course, personal memories like that are added bonuses. The main thing in a restaurant is the food and L’Escargot Blanc meets its claims of ‘Cuisine Classic Francaise’ and ‘French Twist using the best of Scotland’ with ease. This is my third visit there and they have reached this high standard each time, providing relaxed yet attentive service, in our case from the charming maître de, Olivier.

From the blackboard menu (2 courses for £10.90) my party of 3 enjoyed duck rillettes with salad to start followed by Toulouse sausage in brown lentils and poached ling in a sweet red pepper sauce served with creamy mash and a perfectly cooked dish of vegetables from East Coast Organic to share. As ever, a big stone jar of cornichons was placed on the table with the generous plate of bread and butter. Filled by these treats, we decided to share some delectable macarons that come from Pontalier in Paris. These delights (passion fruit, apricot and green tea with caramel flavours) were served with sharp gooseberry ice cream – the perfect end to a perfect lunch (apart from having opted out of wine!)

The à la carte menu comprises a tempting range of aperitifs , starters from £4.90 to £7.90 and a fine selection of artisan cheeses and wines, , all French!  Main dishes range from £13.90 to £41.90, the latter being for Buccleuch beef for two and of course the desserts at £4.90 are not to be missed if possible. L’Escargot Blanc like its sister restaurant, l’Escargot Bleu, does pre-theatre prices which are worth checking.

This is a thoroughly pleasant place to eat and I certainly look forward to la prochaine!
