eclectic home made meals based on taste, quality and seasonality

When Ailith Anderson opened the doors of her Broughton Delicatessen in 2006, it was a bright addition to an already buzzing Broughton village. At first it was what its name tells – a deli with a nice range of cheeses, cold meats, fresh bread and cakes as well as an array of quality dry goods on the shelves. In time, the space has developed to a full blown cafe/restaurant and extended its opening hours.

The aim of this fine independent is “...to bring good home cooking to a local community and provide...eclectic meals ...based on ...taste, quality and seasonality.” All the food is prepared in the downstairs kitchen of the premises, where they make their own dips and chutneys and roast their own beef and ham, the latter being a particular favourite of mine!

The menu is changed regularly and the meals available always make you wish you were staying to eat, if you happen just to be buying a baguette that day from the friendly staff. There can be savoury tarts, like the gorgeous goat’s cheese and spinach I had last week, or a filled filo pastry and sometimes a stew but their speciality is their salads. They are always colourful, tempting and VERY tasty. They offer soup, sandwiches, flat bread pizza, crêpes and platters as standard and a children’s menu that offers proper food instead of synthetic junk.

They offer quality coffee, hot chocolate and tea and the cold drinks’ selection includes the perfect Bundaberg ginger beer with a range of lovely Fentiman’s soft drinks. There is a yummy brunch menu that along with an ethical full Scottish includes American style pancakes or a savoury crêpe.

Every day sees a fresh selection of cakes, also made on the premises and some greetings cards are also for sale. As well as all these treats, you can buy olive oil and balsamic vinegar on tap and there are always works of art by local artists on the cafe walls.
