It’s Raining Hats and Dogs at the City Art Centre
A series of FREE events for adults and families from 11 am – 9 pm at the City Art Centre, Saturday 14 May
These events celebrate paintings we have in our collection featuring Dogs and Hats! These paintings are part of our current 5 floor exhibition at the City Art Centre, Scottish Art 1650 – 2010 (14 May-10 July 2011)
For Families – structured workshops making creative head-gear
11 am – 12.30 pm - Fabulous Fascinators workshop with Lindsey Hamilton

Hat Tricks
From Pork Pies to Pill Boxes to Panamas there is a hat out there for everyone!
A light hearted look at hats with milliner Felicity Faichney and which hats suit whom, and how to wear them.
12 noon
From Bustles to Freedom!
Costume collector Bertha Walker will discuss the evolution of costume from the Victorian period to the 1930s using selected works from the Scottish Art exhibition and examples from her own collection.
2pm
The Japanese Influence
Taking inspiration from some of the paintings on display, costume collector Bertha Walker will discuss the influence of Japan on costume and accessories from the late Victorian period to the 1920s.
7pm – 9 pm
Hatwalk Fashion Show featuring work by 5 leading Scottish Milliners and also the work of local schools. The compere for this event will be well known Edinburgh writer Sara Sheridan, author of Secret of the Sands. www.sarasheridan.com
The City Art Centre café will also be open this evening. Come and have some great food, and watch our unique and dynamic fashion show.

A Renaissance Fashion Show at Trinity Apse with Afternoon Tea

This exciting and dynamic period fashion show consists of 16th Century inspired outfits.
An introductory talk will be followed by models appearing in eight fabulous historical costumes.
Each costume will be accompanied by period music, a motion video of historical images and a talk about its design and construction.

A Court Costume for King James VI
A beautiful Peacock Blue Silk ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ style gown
A Blue Velvet ‘Anne Boleyn’ Gown
An Orange Silk Tudor Masquerade Costume

A Pink Silk French Dress
A Gold Silk Gown designed for Elizabeth I
Henry VIII dressed in full regalia
A Gown inspired by Mary Queen of Scots at Fotheringay. Mary removes her black robe to reveal a bright red petticoat and bodice underneath (the colour of Catholic martyrs).
Afternoon Tea will be served after the fashion show.

A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Lauriston Castle

Sunday 15 May, 10 am – 1 pm
A Day of Utter Wackiness at Lauriston Castle linking to the Victorian/Edwardian era.
Using wacky materials families will get the chance to create their own unique mad hat, and then be guest of honour at a very special tea party in the Lauriston Gardens. Create a massive funny plate of zany food from special card and papers. You will get to ice some very unusual cakes in the old Castle kitchen. Come along all dressed up and hunt for clues in the woods and you will hear special stories. Make some surreal creative puppets. Move from activity to activity, and experience a variety of creative workshops.
