The Poet Laureate returns to the Fringe

Following her acclaimed 2009 show, Carol Ann Duffy will once again be appearing with her daughter Ella and the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist John Sampson in The Princess’ Blankets at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

In the show, Carol Ann’s reading of the long children’s poem, an enchanting and thought-provoking tale with a strong environmental theme, is punctuated by contributions from Ella and music played by John Sampson on an esoteric collection of historic and modern wind instruments. The long poem is also interspersed with some of Carol Ann’s more adult poems and a lively, witty interplay between the participants to create an intelligent and entertaining performance that never fails to engage and delight.

Reviews in 2009 praised the show’s balance of humour, magic and emotion, and the way in which it made a clear connection with the younger audience members without any suggestion of dumbing down the quality or content of the poetry. Exactly, as one critic said, the kind of thing a Poet Laureate should be doing.

The Princess’ Blankets is suitable for everyone aged eight and over.
