Students hold Art Exhibition to make money for Princes Trust
The event will run this week starting this Wednesday 17th from 20:00-23:00. Subsequent opening times are Thursday and Friday 10:00-17:00 and Saturday 11:00-16:00. Work featured has come from a variety of sources, but many of the artists are local or live in Scotland/Northern England. Notable artists who will be showing are the dutch sculptor J P Hol, who is very well known in Japan and elsewhere, who has fully donated several pieces including a sculpture and a videoreel. Also worth mentioning is John Damari, who is well known in Scotland and participates in many charity events similar to this one. He too has fully donated several pieces. An artist that I am personally very excited about seeing is Richard Whincop, who's of surreal satire I find particularly interesting.
In total we have over 60 artists, many of which are listed on our website. In terms of paintings we have over 350 pieces confirmed, and will be showing them on two floors of Adam House. Pieces vary in price and style, from very traditional pieces, to very modern pop art and minimalist pieces. We also have several sculptors and other art not on canvas. Prices for the pieces range from £25 to over £1800, so there is a range to suit every pocket. We take a commission of at least 1/3 from each artist, although many artists have agreed to donate more or even all of the money.
Our opening night is going to be very exciting. We will have several musicians providing entertainment, and will have a bar serving drinks. Furthermore, there will be artists painting live on the night, a fractal art demonstration, many of the artists attending the event, a raffle, and various guest speakers including one from The Prince's Trust. Entry to the night is free. Raffle prizes include a commissioned piece by the artists Henrietta DeRitter, which can be anything from a portrait to an abstract piece.
The subsequent day sales will be slightly more low key, and perhaps a better chance to fully appreciate all of the paintings. We will be serving tea/coffee and various snacks.
Let me also give you a bit of detail about why we are organising this event. All of us study business related subjects at Edinburgh University and are in our second year. Aside from the studying, we all have similar extra curricular interests, which includie entrepreneurialism. Having heard of the competition by Ernst and Young called Profitunity, we decided this would be the right thing for us to enter as a group. We had several meetings and formulated a business plan of having this art sale. Having done a project analysis, we knew we could be successful. Obviously Ernst and Young agreed, because they picked us to represent Edinburgh University in the competition. We are competing against 11 other universities from across the UK, and we hope to show that Edinburgh has what it takes.
