MAKING GOOD SOCIETY

Final report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society in the UK and Ireland

Scottish Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street, Edinburgh EH1 1SR

Thursday 18 March 2010, 10.00-12.00am

The final report of the independent Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society in the UK and Ireland, supported by the Carnegie UK Trust, in Edinburgh on 18 March 2010.

The Inquiry has involved hundreds of participants from all parts of civil society, and the Commission itself is made up of leading figures from the voluntary sector, faith, business, trade unions and politics, including Geoff Mulgan (Commission Chair), The Ven. Richard Atkinson, Joyce McMillan, chief theatre critic of the Scotsman, and Philomena de Lima of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

The final Commission report, Making Good Society, highlights the critical importance of civil society activity (including voluntary and community organisations, faith-based organisations, trades unions, cooperatives and mutuals) in tackling some of the most pressing issues of our time and advocates a radical expansion of civil society's role, with detailed recommendations on finance and the economy; climate change and resource scarcity; the media and reforming politics.

The launch of Making Good Society will bring together representatives from across civil society and other sectors to hear firsthand about the findings of the Commission report. We will also be joined by guest speakers including Martin Sime of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO). Importantly the event will be an opportunity to discuss how to galvanise civil society and other sectors to take forward the ideas in the Commission report, and put civil society centre stage in the run up to and beyond the general election.
