I don't like electric blankets so this is not for me but this leapt out at me from this release:
"Last winter nearly 85% of the blankets tested in Edinburgh on behalf of the ESC were found to have safety issues."
Here's the full press release:
"Safety tests on electric blankets will be on offer at special events hosted in your area by the City of Edinburgh Council's Trading Standards team.
The sessions at the Council's six neighbourhood offices between 9:30am and 1pm on Thursday 12 November 2009 are being run in partnership with the Electric Safety Council (ESC).
Faulty electric blankets have been identified as the cause of one in ten deaths in household fires started by electrical appliances.
The ESC recommends that electric blankets older than 10 years should no longer be used. New blankets should be bought from a reputable retailer and people are advised to check the product for the UK Safety standard mark.
Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environment Leader, said: "Before the cold nights really begin to draw in, and people dig out their electric blankets, we would urge them to get them checked out. We are delighted to be hosting these events in partnership with the Electric Safety Council.”
“These free tests are a great way to make sure that everyone in Edinburgh can be assured of a safe night's sleep.”

Lorraine Carney of the ESC said: "Again this year we will be replacing faulty or dangerous electric blankets with brand new ones, for free.”
Members of the Trading Standards team will be on hand at the six neighbourhood offices, on Thursday 12 November to test and replace, free of charge, any old and potentially dangerous electric blankets.
