Music, Storytelling Theatre with Corell's Mandolin and an exclusive visit this November

Storytelling theatre and music merge in perfect melodies at the Storytelling Centre this November.

The Scottish Storytelling Centre is proud host to a series of events that combine captivating tales, mesmerising music and storytelling theatre.

Music

The Centre hosts two events as part of the Carrying Stream Festival, which honours folklorist Hamish Henderson (1919-2002). Homage to Hamish on the 5th at 7.30pm is hosted by singer, songwriter and storyteller Nancy Nicolson and features Gill Bowman’s ‘Toasting the Lassies’, poet Tom Hubbard and melodeon-playing singer Jim Bainbridge. On the 6th at 7.30pm, ‘The Outside Track’ team up with well-known and loved musician John Carnie for a night of music magic fusing traditional with a jazzy, modern twist.

Acclaimed Theatre

From bluesy beats to Mandolin magic as the Centre hosts Mike Maran’s award-winning, virtuoso storytelling theatre performance of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. There will be two very special performances of the celebrated stage adaptation at the Centre, in aid of the KIS Endowment Fund, on the 7th – a matinee at 2.30pm and an evening gala at 7pm which will be followed by a buffet supplied by Valvona & Crolla.

Set on the Greek island of Cephalonia from the Second World War until the present day, it follows the story of Dr. Iannis, his daughter, Pelagia, an heroic Italian soldier, Carlo Guercio and Captain Antonio Corelli, and explores the love they all share. This passionate story will joyfully sweep you away but also make the heartache, foreboding and rage of war boil within you. It is full of laughter and tears, the joy of love, and ultimately, the triumph of life over death.

“Sure to have both fans of the original script and first-time viewers laughing, crying and applauding its life-affirming resonance and amusing personalities”. The Metro

These performances are being held in aid of the KIS Endowment Fund – an Edinburgh charity that supports research into the treatment of bowel cancer. Two of the cast, Mike Maran (actor) and Ali Stephens (mandolin) were treated for their cancers and they have been raising money to thank the doctors and nurses who successfully treated them. Mike and Ali are both fit and well. It is a wonderful show and a good time is guaranteed.

Exclusive

From Mandolin plucking to stone tossing, the Centre is hosting an exclusive Edinburgh visit from highly acclaimed English Storytelling performer Hugh Lupton who is presenting a performance and workshop. Over the last decade this gifted tale-weaver has created exquisite and moving praise songs, prose poems and story-cycles to honour the lives of friends and relatives. In The Homing Stone on the 21st, Hugh celebrates the adventures of his great uncle, Arthur Ransome, author of Swallows and Amazons.

Hugh vividly brings to life his great uncle’s involvement in the turbulent days of the Russian Revolution. Having lost his heart to Trotsky's secretary Evgenia in 1919, they fled and travelled towards the Baltic Sea, with Arthur carrying in his pocket a stone from Peel Island on Coniston Water, which produced an inexorable pull homewards. Hugh evocatively explores this story using music and words, drawing on the traditions of Russian folk melody and the richness of the folk music of the Lake District.

“Hugh Lupton’s storytelling art is sheer wizardry in the guise of utter simplicity…a packed house sat in a thrall of enchantment, no movement, no intrusive sounds”. Eastern Daily Press

Hugh will also be leading a workshop entitled The Music of What Happens on the 22nd which gives insight and exploration into the ether between biographic and mythic. With emphasis on oral telling to evoke and invoke person, time and place it explores the events that define a life, with participants encouraged to bring their own autobiographical stories to work with and weave into performance under Hugh’s expert tutelage.

“Hugh Lupton excels in stories of love, passion and emotion” Folk Roots
