Jane's Police Review Gala Awards Nominations from Lothian and Borders Police
The Only National Awards for Recognising and Rewarding Excellence in Policing in the United Kingdom
London (14th October 2009) - The nominations received for the 2009 Jane's Police
Review Gala Awards are considered to be outstanding by the judging panel. These awards are the most prestigious and high-profile awards for recognising the work of the United Kingdom's police forces.
The
Rt Hon David Hanson MP, Minister for State for Policing, Crime and
Counter Terrorism will present all nominees with an engraved medal at
the Jane's Police Review Gala Awards dinner on Wednesday 28th October 2009. The dinner will take place at the London Hilton Park Lane Hotel where he will also announce the winners. Jane's
Police Review Gala Awards Dinner will be attended by the most senior
and influential figures from the policing community and will be hosted
by Huw Edwards, news presenter.
Jane's
Police Review Editor, Chris Herbert, said, "Jane's Police Review Gala
Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the work carried out by the
UK's police force and reward those that go that extra mile to carry out
their duties."
The Lifetime Achievement Award was introduced to the Jane's Police Review Gala Awards in 2003 and commends an officer in the last year of his or her service.
The winner receives an engraved glass award and a voucher for £500.
Nomination for The Lifetime Achievement Award:
Name: Special constable Frank Johnston
Force: Lothian and Borders Police
Career highlights: SC Frank Johnston has been based at Craigmillar police station since
1976, before which he served in the Special constabulary from 1969, the
force says.
SC
Johnston has served the Craigmillar community despite its 'significant
and demanding social issues', the force says, and policed the Edinburgh
Military Tattoo for 35 years in a way that 'portrays an excellent image
of the service'.
Having
trained and mentored junior colleagues, the force says that SC Johnston
is well-respected, a good communicator, highly motivated and always
keen to volunteer for work.
He has also received numerous awards and commendations for the length and quality of his force service.
What others say: A spokesman for the force says, "Frank has gone far beyond what could be expected. He does not seek any other reward other than the satisfaction that he is putting something back into the community."
The Community Police Officer of the Year Award was established as a national event in 1992 to promote the positive
side of police work which seldom gets the publicity it deserves. Officers are nominated for the award by their forces and judged on their personal skills and local initiatives to combat crime. Each
nomination is supported by evidence of the community's support for the
officer's work and details of the officers achievements. The
winner receives an engraved gold medal and £3,000 funding for a bursary
trip overseas to study community policing in another country.
Nomination for The Community Police Officer of the Year Award:
Name: PC Simon Daley
Force: Lothian and Borders Police
Career highlights: The Broughton ward of Edinburgh, PC Simon Daley's beat, is one of the city's most ethnically diverse, according to his force.
A
spokesman says PC Daley has worked hard to try to improve the strained
relationships existing between some residents and the large Polish
community in the area.
To help bridge the gap, PC Daley researched the history between Scotland and Poland and sought funding for a war memorial to the Scotland-based Polish soldiers who fought and died during the Second World War. After two years of work PC Daley was successful and the memorial was unveiled in November 2008.
As a result PC Daley was invited to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street to discuss his work.
What others say: David Strang, chief constable of the force, says, "PC Daley has made a difference to the people of north Edinburgh. He has worked with the community to give them a chance to turn their relationship around."
