Henderson's Homecoming Festival Shows

Henderson's Fringe Productions

Firstly, on Sunday 30th at 19.00 and Sunday 6th September at 17.00
(an earlier start to allow people to see the fireworks concert
afterwards) we have 'Homecoming at Henderson's' with the amazing Wendy
Carle Taylor and an evening of glorious Scots song both old and new.

Originally from Aberdeenshire, it is said that Wendy Carle Taylor
could sing before she could speak. The great Scottish ballad singer
Sheila Stewart once described Wendy as having 'the Conyach - the gift
of singing from the heart and soul' and this Edinburgh based vocalist
is renowned for her moving and utterly beautiful interpretations of
contemporary and traditional Scots song. Her repertoire is far from
limited, however, encompassing as it does everything from French
chanson to jazz and blues. Wendy will be accompanied on the clarsach by Ailie Robertson, one
of the hottest new names on the traditional music scene. A four-time
National Mod Gold Medal Winner, Ailie also won first prize at the
inaugural London Harp Festival and has been the recipient of many other
awards including the prestigious St Albans New Roots title. Ailie
released 'First Things First' to great acclaim in 2008, one reviewer
noting simply 'a player of Ailie's class has the ability to tear your
heart out'. A stalwart of the Scottish folk circuit, the brilliant and
exhilerating guitarist Tony Mitchell will complete the line-up.

The evening is not merely about song however, as the ticket also
entitles you to a champagne reception in the Henderson Gallery before
the show and a delicious three course meal prepared by the celebrated
chefs of Scotland's legendary vegetarian restaurant.

The whole package promises an unforgettable night out and the best
way possible to celebrate the year of Homecoming. Tickets are available
from the Henderson's Box Office at 25A Thistle Street, telephone 0131
225 4991 or online at www.hendersonsofedinburgh.co.uk.

Meanwhile at The Henderson Gallery the current show is 'Through A
Glass Darkly' by Paul Martin. A graduate of the Royal Academy, Paul has
gone on to become one of the most highly regarded artists of his
generation. Recently retired after having taught for many years at
Leith School of Art, he has exhibited widely both at home and abroad
and his work is in many important national collections, including those
of the Royal Academy, the British Museum and the BBC. His new show is
an attempt to describe the presence of a universal language and essence
behind the phenomenal world. Through painterly metaphors of sign,
rhythm and colour the exhibition presents us with a new perspective on
our surroundings and invites us into Paul's unique visual world. It
runs at the Henderson Gallery until 3rd October.

One other thing - in your excellent review of our 'Breakfast with
Burns' John Sampson and Stewart Hanratty come in for high praise.  Their own show is
'Burns, Before and Beyond', it explores the music of Burns, his
influences and legacy, and it is on at 10.30 (10.00 for breakfast) on
the 29th August and from the 31st August until the 5th September.
