"Heads Up" the new portrait of a Nation Blog

HEADS UP THE NEW PORTRAIT OF THE NATION BLOG

The National Galleries of Scotland

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is proud to announce the launch of Heads Up a blog where you can get a behind-the-scenes look at Portrait of the Nation,
the imaginative scheme to renovate and rejuvenate the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Over the next two years Heads Up will give you the chance to peek behind the gallery's closed doors and
meet the people who are working on the project. Most importantly
it's a place for you to tell us what you think about the project and
get involved with our upcoming events and exhibitions.

The
inaugural bloggers are James Holloway, Director of the Scottish
National Portrait Gallery, Robert Galbraith, Portrait of the Nation
Programme Manager, Imogen Gibbon,
Senior Curator of the Reference Section, and Richie Cumming, Outreach
Officer. Each of the bloggers will be giving you their own unique
personal insights into the project using words, photos and video
transporting you from the graffiti covered walls of Rough
Cut Nation
exhibition to the decanting of the Antiquaries' Library.
You can also discover more about Portrait of the Nation on the National Galleries of Scotland website, where you can find plans for the building, details on how the project
has been funded, and how you can donate.

If you're missing the Portrait
Gallery collection our new feature Portrait
of the Month
showcases individual works chosen by staff and supporters of the
gallery and space to add your own thoughts and memories, and an ongoing
video programme of artists' interviews.  This months work is Charles
Lees' The Golfers 1847 selected by Dr Stephen Lloyd.
Heads Up is
part of a whole host of new National Galleries of Scotland online
initiatives which provide new and exciting ways for people to interact
with the collection.

The new Scottish
Art
feature, launched earlier this year, allows visitors to explore
Scottish art by theme, browse artists alphabetically, view a selection
of highlights from the Scottish collection, and find further sources of
research.

Earlier this year The Scottish National Photography Collection made its debut to Flickr Commons.
National Galleries
of Scotland was the first Scottish organisation to join this
initiative, which aims to promote "hidden treasures" from the world's
public photography archives. We have currently over 100 photographs
from the Photography Collection available to view, and since
the January launch we received an incredible 148,551 views.
