MO HAYDER - SKIN
DATE:
THURSDAY 2ND APRIL
TIME: 6:15PM FOR A 6:30PM START
Blackwell welcomes Mo Hayder the well known Crime writer to share with us her latest
suspense filled novel ‘Skin'.
Following along
from the first in The Walking Man series - ‘Ritual', which was nominated
for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger award, ‘Skin' returns to the world of DI Jack Caffery who we know well
from Mo's other novels ‘Birdman' and
‘The Treatment'.
Within the
beginning of ‘Skin' we are instantly
thrown into a chilling story, when the decomposed body of
a young woman is found near by railway tracks, just outside Bristol one hot May
morning, all indications are that she's committed suicide. That's how the
police want it too; all neatly squared and tidied away. But DI Jack Caffery is
not so sure. He is on the trail of someone predatory, someone who hides in the
shadows and can slip into houses unseen. And for the first time in a very long
time, he feels scared.
Police Diver Flea Marley is
working alongside Caffery. Having come to terms with the loss of her parents,
and with the traumas of her past safely behind her, she's beginning to wonder
whether their relationship could go beyond the professional. And then she finds
something that changes everything. Not only is it far too close to home for
comfort - but it's so horrifying that she knows that nothing will ever be the
same again. And that this time, no one - not even Caffery - can help her...
Come along and discover
more clues as we attempt to solve this latest DI Jack Caffrey mystery.
This event is ticketed, but tickets are FREE.
Tickets are available from the front desk of Blackwell, South Bridge.

GILLIAN
GALBRAITH - DYING OF THE LIGHT
DATE: WEDNESDAY 15TH APRIL
TIME: 6:15PM FOR A 6:30PM START.
Blackwell takes great pleasure in welcoming Gillian Galbraith here to discuss with us her latest novel - ‘Dying of the light'.
After the success of Gillian's other novels ‘Blood in the water' and ‘Where the shadow falls' we are very
keen to discover what has happened to Detective Sergeant Alice Rice and ‘Dying of the light' does not disappoint.
It is midwinter and a
freezing night in Leith, near Edinburgh's red light district. A policewoman's flashlight stabs the darkness in
a snow-covered cemetery, the circle of light stops on a colourless, dead face.
So begins the hunt for a serial murderer of prostitutes. Partly inspired by the
real-life killings of prostitutes in Ipswich, this novel explores a hidden world where sex is bartered for money and
drugs.
Whilst off-duty, Alice's home life continues its
uneven course. Her romance with the artist Ian Melville offers the prospect of
happiness, but is plagued by insecurity. Her demented but determined neighbour,
Miss Spinnell, offers a new challenge to Alice's patience at every
meeting.
Please join us for a FREE
glass of wine and nibbles whilst we try to discover the outcome of Gillian
Galbraith's latest thrilling novel.
This event is ticketed, but tickets are FREE.
Tickets are available from the front desk of Blackwell, South Bridge.
TASNIM K HUSSAIN - CURRIES
MADE SIMPLE
DATE: THURSDAY 16TH APRIL
TIME: 6:15PM FOR A 6:30PM START
Blackwell is pleased to present an
evening with Tasnim K Hussain the
cook and author of ‘Curries made
Simple'.
‘Curries Made Simple' is a no-nonsense approach
to cooking, using readily available ingredients that you should be able to pick
up at your local supermarket and using only standard kitchen utensils and
appliances without the need for special cooking gadgets. Written by a full-time
working mum - Tasnim K Hussain, the
book carefully guides you through simple step by step instructions.
Tasnim has taken great care in
making traditional and authentic recipes, which are more practical for the busy
curry lover. She has no secrets, just helpful advice about preparing
ingredients in advance and therefore substantially reducing cooking time and
that you should always adjust spices to suit your own palate, but maintain a
balance with the salt and chillies.
Like many foods sold on the
high street, curries can sometimes be seen as unhealthy. With this in mind, all
the recipes have been carefully refined for the health conscious individual,
without losing any of the delicious authentic taste.
Tasnim will be supplying some
amazing dishes for us to try and will even do a wee demonstration right here in
front of your eyes.
So please come along and
learn how to create your own ‘Curries made simple' and enjoy a taste of some of
Tasnim's own creations.
This event is ticketed, but tickets are FREE. Tickets are available from the
front desk of Blackwell, South Bridge.

EDINBURGH

AVAILABLE FROM: FRONT DESK
OF BLACKWELL BOOKSHOP, SOUTH BRIDGE
Blackwell takes great pleasure in hosting an evening with Monica Ali the award winning,
bestselling author of ‘Brick Lane’. She will be joining us to celebrate the release of her brand new novel
‘In the Kitchen’.
‘Who ends up in the kitchen, Gabe?’
‘Misfits’, he said, ‘psychos, exiles, culinary
artists, and people who just need a job.’
‘In the Kitchen’ is the stunning follow up
to ‘Brick Lane’. It opens with a
mysterious death in the cellars of a smart cosmopolitan hotel.
Over the course of the ensuing pages, it peels back
the layers of polyglot London to reveal the melting pot,
which exists below. With her own multicultural background of growing up in England, but being born in Dhaka, Bangladesh Monica has a unique insight into this side of London, all of which comes across
very strongly within the writing and helps you to be swept along by the story.
Once again this book confirms Monica Ali not only as a great modern storyteller, but also as an
acute observer of the vagaries of a contemporary culture.
Monica is one of Granta’s Best of
the Young British Novelists of the decade, Newcomer of the Year at the 2004
British Book Awards and has been nominated for most of the major literary
prizes in Britain.
Her first novel, ‘Brick Lane’ was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, the George Orwell Prize for
political writing and the prestigious Commonwealth Writer’s Prize.
I am sure that we can expect ‘In the Kitchen’ to be as wonderful and awe inspiring as Monica’s past works.
If you are a long time fan or just curious about
this much publicized author please join us for an evening with Monica Ali.
