Spring
/ Summer Season 2009
The
hotly anticipated event in the Traverse Theatre's Spring / Summer 2009 season
is the world premiere of Hoors, the latest play from Gregory
Burke, writer of Black Watch and Gagarin Way. Directed by Jimmy Fay, Hoors is a
darkly humourous portrait of a group of Fife
thirty-somethings caught up in a wedding gone seriously awry. It opens in
Traverse 1 on 5 May and runs until 23 May before transferring to the Tron
Theatre, Glasgow for two
weeks.
The
Traverse Company season continues in collaboration with one of Scotland's best
loved theatre institutions, A Play, A Pie and A Pint. In a new
partnership with Glasgow's Oran
Mor, we introduce the successful lunchtime theatre programme to Edinburgh audiences.
Opening in Traverse 2 on 17 March at 1pm with Kyoto by David Greig, the series features new
works by some of Scotland's leading
writers including David Harrower, Alan Bisset, Robert Forrest and Jo
Clifford. This unique lunchtime experience comprises a pie and drink as
well as the play for the ticket price of £10.
In
April we present the world premiere of Interiors in a co-production between Vanishing Point, Traverse Theatre and Napoli Teatro Festival, Italy. Interiors will explore ideas of
communication and voyeurism through a unique combination of soundscapes,
projections and live performance creating a visually stunning new show. Interiors will run at the Traverse from
3 - 10 April, before touring to Stirling, Aberdeen, London, Glasgow and
finally the Napoli Festival.
From February to April we continue our
international touring programme with our award-winning production of David Greig's Damascus, which makes its
London premiere at the Tricycle Theatre.on
9 February. The production will then travel to Syria where it will premiere in Damascus itself before embarking on a tour of the Middle and Near East, visiting Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, and Palestine.
There is a full schedule of workshops this season from some of the UK's most interesting theatre practitioners including Jeremy Herbert, Steven
Greenhorn and our new Pearson Playwright in Residence Sam Holcroft.
As part of Paris Calling, a UK-wide year of
events celebrating cultural links between the UK and France, the Traverse will be collaborating with Théâtre Ouvert, Paris and the
Maison Antoine Vitez translation house on a stage translation project for
contemporary plays. The Traverse and its French counterpart will host
translation residencies with writers from France and Scotland, culminating in discussions and staged readings of these newly
commissioned translations at the Traverse from 10 - 11 June. Further details
will be confirmed in April.
The Traverse is always exploring different ways to
encourage creative exchange. Building on the success of Zinnie Harris' Words Words Words events, we are launching a full programme of free Monday night performances in the Traverse Café Bar. Running in parallel to Words, Words Words will be two new events, all non-ticketed. Wildfire,
curated by our Director in Residency Cheryl
Martin, will challenge public and performers alike to create a 10-minute new work live on the night,
featuring input and entertainment from live artists. Noisy Nights will feature new works by contemporary
composers, performed in an informal setting by the Red Note Ensemble, lead by musician and composer John Harris.
Now in its 19th year, Class Act,
the Traverse Theatre's annual schools playwriting project continues to
engage and inspire school pupils from across Edinburgh and West Lothian
to write their own short plays and develop their work with the help of
a Traverse director and professional actors. These brand new plays will
be showcased in Traverse 1 on 10 and 11 February.
Our visiting company programme includes Stellar Quines & Perissology Theatre (Baby Baby, 3 - 5 March);
Lyceum Youth Theatre (Success, 12 - 14 March); National Theatre of Scotland (Be Near Me, 15 - 18 April); Magnetic North (After Mary Rose, 6 - 9 May) and Borderline Theatre Company (The Ducky, 10 - 13 June). We are continuing to work with the Arches Award for Stage Directors and this year's winning productions from Sacha Kyle (The Library) and Nic Green (Trilogy: Part Two -Town Bloody Hall) will be presented as a double bill from 22 - 25 April.
This season's dance programme, presented in association with Dance Base, includes visits from Newcastle-based Ballet Lorent (Designer Body, 21 Mar); local errol white dance company (Three Works, 5 - 6 June) and a return visit for Tilted Productions (T[r]APPED, 20 June).
