Edinburgh Colleagues get set to Launch Cancer Research UK's Race for Life 2009

EDINBURGH
COLLEAGUES GET SET TO LAUNCH RACE FOR LIFE 2009.

A TEAM
of four colleagues whose lives have all been touched by cancer are inviting
Edinburgh women to do something amazing to help more people survive the
disease.

Eileen
Thomson, 42, Linsey Horsburgh, 28, Barbara McFarlane, 38 and Norma Gray, 42,
who all work at the city's Franklin Templeton Investments are urging
local women to register for Cancer Research UK's Race for Life at
Edinburgh's Holyrood Park on Sunday 28th June, 2009.

They
will be first off the starting blocks when Sara-Jane Rice, Edinburgh Race for
Life Event Manager, sounds an air horn to symbolise the regional launch of Race
for Life 2009.

Barbara
McFarlane said: "One of the best things about Race for Life is the huge
turnout. Everyone from young children to elderly ladies comes together to help
beat cancer. Whether you walk it or run it, everyone enjoys it!

"My
grandfather died very soon after he was diagnosed with cancer which was a real
blow to the family. I will be doing the Race for Life in his memory."

Norma
Gray added: "My father died of cancer almost two years ago. I know
he'd be really proud of us coming together to help fund research into
ways of beating the disease. I will be dedicating my Race for Life to
him."

Together
with teammates Linsey and Eileen, Norma and Barbara hope to raise hundreds of
pounds for the charity. They will join an estimated 8,000 women at Holyrood
Park on June 28 who together hope to raise an incredible £500,000 for
Cancer Research UK.

Eileen
Thomson said: "One of my friends lost her 17 year-old daughter to cancer
and she inspired me to take part. The great thing about Race for Life is that
it doesn't matter how young or old you are, or how fit you are; if you
can walk 5k you can do something amazing!"

Linsey
Horsburgh added: "Cancer touches almost everyone, and this is a
fundraiser that everyone can get involved in. This will be my second Race for
Life and I'm really looking forward to it."

Last year Cancer Research UK spent more than £6 million in Edinburgh on a
variety of projects designed to improve the understanding and treatment of the
disease. One project at the University of Edinburgh aims to understand how
cancer cells move, with the hope of developing treatments which could prevent
cancer from spreading to other parts of the body.

Cancer
Research UK's Sara-Jane Rice said: "We hope that everyone will
accept our invitation to do something amazing by taking part in Race for
Life.  Women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes join in.  They
motivate and inspire each other to complete the course.  Many simply walk
round, chatting and having fun, but they all share the wonderful spirit of
sisterhood and pride on the day."

She
added: "This year in Edinburgh you have the choice to walk, jog or run 5k
or step up the challenge and double your distance by taking part in Race for
Life 10k. Whichever you choose you can go at your own pace and enjoy a great
day out."

Sara-Jane
continued: "Cancer Research UK believes that research is the key to
developing better ways of preventing, detecting and treating the disease.
With the help of Edinburgh women, and those they encourage and sponsor their
Race for Life efforts, we will beat cancer."
