Janis Claxton Dance present Falling Light

Fresh from the
critically acclaimed performances of Enclosure 44 - Humans at Edinburgh Zoo,
Janis Claxton Dance returns indoors with an international cast of dancers for a
unique triple bill of musically inspired work. Falling Light features
live performances from internationally renowned Edinburgh Quartet including the
first Scottish and Welsh performances of acclaimed Polish composer Henryk
Górecki's masterpiece, String Quartet No.3 ‘songs are sung'.

The elegant, earthy
and sensuous style of Janis Claxton Dance will be channelled through three very
different musical pieces in this compelling triple bill.

JCD's highly acclaimed
Rinne showcases the intricate music of Australian ensemble
Waratah. In a physical and mentally demanding performance, dancers ‘sing' to
the music with their bodies emulating the taut precision and rhythmic structure
of the beats played on Japanese Koto, Saxophone and Tabla.

Torque features Bach's Partita No.2 as played live on
viola by Edinburgh Quartet's Michael Beeston. Originating from research at
Edinburgh Zoo on the relationship of human to animal gesture and play, new
exciting movements emerge with a wild, yet structured abandon.

Finally songs
are sung
is inspired by Górecki's exquisite score of the same name
embodying the agony and ecstasy of the human condition in almost every note.
Richly layered, deeply textured and emotionally compelling the work will
include the full company of 6 female dancers all of whom contributed to the
making of the piece which will be played live at each performance by the
Edinburgh Quartet.

Janis Claxton Dance is
an award winning contemporary dance company based in Edinburgh. Founded by
prolific dancer, choreographer and teacher Janis Claxton; the company's work
possesses an inherent lightness and ease alongside an earthy and energetic
physicality, highlighted by a musical clarity and sensuosity. In 2008 Janis
Claxton Dance won a Herald Angel Award and was shortlisted for a Total Theatre
Award for the site specific piece Enclosure 44 - Humans.
