Young Scottish Composer's Night at the Proms

Millions
of people will hear the latest work by young Scottish composer Anna Meredith -
specially commissioned for the Last Night of the Proms on Saturday, August 16.
It will reach an estimated six million television viewers in Britain and a further 40 million
listeners worldwide.

Meredith,
who grew up in South
Queensferry,
was entrusted by the BBC with the task of producing a work to open the second
half of the closing concert in the Albert Hall. Her composition will be played
simultaneously in the Albert Hall and  by
Proms in the Park orchestras and massed choirs in Hyde Park, Cardiff, Belfast and Glasgow.

"It's
a  five-minute piece for about 800
performers," Meredith said.

She was quoted last week as saying she
hadn't yet finished the still unnamed work.

"I'm waiting for Dad to email me some
ideas," she said. "He's good at that at that and has come up with lots of my
titles.

"Dad" is Mark Meredith, newly retired head
of the post-graduate school of Journalism at Napier University.

Meredith has had previous works broadcast .
Now London-based, she was for some three years
Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Orchestra.

Earlier, Scots composer James Macmillan
asked her to produce a piece for the Huddersfield Festival. She is currently
working on an opera to be premiered next year by Aldeburgh Music.
