Opera
Circus presents
Differences in Demolitions
A moving
work drawing on the Bosnian music of Sevdah
The Scottish tour of Differences in Demolitions, presented by
Opera Circus, opens at the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy on Wednesday 14 May
and continues to Stirling, Inverness, St.
Andrews, Glasgow and Edinburgh. This
magical and beautiful new chamber opera with music by the renowned Scottish
composer Nigel Osborne, and libretto by the eminent Bosnian poet Goran Simic, marks
the return of Opera Circus to Scotland, as part of the Scottish Arts Council
Tune Up series.
A celebration of composer Nigel
Osborne's 60th year and collaboration between the UK and
Bosnia & Heregovina, Differences in Demolitions presents a
powerful story of conflict, greed and desire in a world surrounded by
destruction and demolition.
Hassan, a building worker,
cherishes a secret love for Sevda. His family Han (an inn) is cursed. A
mythical woman embroiders love, life and fate into a scarf, which becomes torn.
Sevda begins her journey, which unravels, like the scarf, to reveal a tale of
love, longing and revenge.
In 2006, Opera Circus' Artistic Director Tina Ellen Lee commissioned Nigel
Osborne, the eminent Scottish composer, to write a chamber opera inspired by
the Bosnian music of Sevdah. The company partnered with the National
Theatre, Mostar, the National Theatre, Sarajevo,
Musicians without Borders, the Mostar Sinfonietta and Jassen Productions to
create a tour of five major cities in Bosnia & Herzegovina,
alongside an education and training programme, which will also accompany the
Scottish tour. Previously, the opera was performed in London, as
part of the City of London Festival at Wilton's Music
Hall in 2007 where it received high public and critical acclaim.
The artistic ensemble is made up of artists from Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia and
the UK and
includes Susan Bisatt, Monica Brett-Crowther, Aidan Burke, Andy Morton, Robert
Rice and Mladen Vasari who are reunited again for this Scottish tour. Lenka Udovicki directs the opera, with set
design by Marijela Margeta and lighting design by Nick McCall.
Differences
in Demolitions is part of the Scottish Arts Council Tune Up series, music touring across Scotland and
supported by the Scottish Arts Council and BBC Radio Scotland.
Education programme funded by Youth Music Initiative with SAC. Thanks to Esmee
Fairbairn Foundation, the Hope Scott Trust and may others for their generous
support.
Past productions by Opera Circus
in Scotland include Kill Me I love You at the 1992 Edinburgh Festival
Fringe, Shameless, King Stag and Cat Man's Tale.
