This release comes from the Ramshorn. Really, for those who like their comedy a little more high-brow than your typical stand-up act. More theatre than comedy.

THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD
by J.M. Synge
directed by Susan C Triesman
Sponsored by the Henry Ian Cusick Fan Club
Synge's comic masterpiece is one of the most famous, and infamous, plays in the great Irish repertoire of the early days of the Abbey Theatre. Set in a tiny west coast village where people fall hook, line and sinker for a charming young stranger called Christy Mahon, who claims to have murdered his old dad, Synge's play overflows with sympathy and enthusiasm for life - its humour, its bite, its contradictions, its exhileration. And language is the star. The script, rich in imagery and piled high with memorable turns of phrase, highlights all that is upbeat over the more savage elements lurking in the tale.
Synge wrote in his Preface to the play: 'In countries where the imagination of the people, and the language they use, is rich and living, it is possible for a writer to be rich and copious in his words, and at the same time give the reality, which is the root of all poetry, in a comprehensive and natural form.' A century after its controversial première, Playboy has lost none of its power, comedy and poetry.
The Henry Ian Cusick Fan Club decided to sponsor this production and support STG as a Christmas present to Ian (best known as DESMOND in LOST) whose first appearance on the stage was in Susan C Triesman's production of Peasants by the Northern Irish playwright, Thomas McLaughlin.

DEATH OF A CRITIC
by Keir McAllister
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
Siobhan has an idea. An idea for a play. A single, solitary, invisible idea that only exists inside her head. When struggling artists Siobhan and her friend Conner decide to write, direct and star in their own original production, they have high expectations of being discovered, of finally being taken seriously as artists. That is, until a newspaper theatre critic writes a particularly savage review leaving them frustrated, angry, deeply humiliated and perhaps worst of all, without any means by which to dispute publicly the expert opinion of their artistic merit. That's when Siobhan has her second idea. A single, solitary, invisible ideaŠ.except this one has teethŠ
Death of a Critic is a black comedy about artists, their egos and the lengths they'll go to, to preserve them. Written, directed and performed by some of the top stand-up comedians on the Scottish circuit today, this is a twisted comedy for anyone who has ever taken criticism badly.
Keir McAllister's first play, Falling for Grace, previewed at Dundee Rep in 2006 and went on to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has been a successful stand-up comedian since 2004, including Rehab's for Quitters (Edinburgh Fringe 2004), the sell-out show Scotland 4 Australia 1 (Glasgow Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe 2005). His stand-up shows include 4 Men and a Little Lady, Dare U Seesaw, Jest and The Sunshine Variety Couch.
