TUESDAY 22 JANUARY, 6.30pm
Gary Dickson, Honorary Fellow of
History at Edinburgh
University, launches his eagerly
anticipated work The Children’s
Crusade. One of the most extraordinary episodes in the history of the
crusades, the Children’s Crusade has been imagined and re-imagined across the
centuries – Professor Dickson explores the history and myth behind the event in
this fresh and lively new investigation, already being called a classic.
Don’t
miss what’s sure to be an evening of stimulating discussion and debate.
WEDNESDAY 23 JANUARY, 6.30pm
Join us
for the launch of Capital
Caricatures, a brand new collection of the etchings of John Kay. A brilliant
caricaturist of the late 1700s, Kay’s pen left no aspect of eighteenth-century
Edinburgh life untouched – in this
new anthology you will find famous faces such as Adam Smith and Deacon Brodie
rubbing shoulders with lesser known figures such as Sibilla Hunt, the most
corpulent shopkeeper in the city!
Kay
expert and enthusiast Sheila
Szatkowski has edited this ‘wholly delightful and endlessly fascinating’
volume (Alan Taylor, Sunday Herald) and will be appearing in-store to discuss
the life and works of this great social commentator.
FRIDAY 25 JANUARY, 6.30pm
Celebrate Burns Night at Blackwell with the launch of a new Burns
anthology from Canongate, A Night Out
With Robert Burns. We are delighted to welcome the collection’s editor and
acclaimed Scottish novelist Andrew
O’Hagan (author of Our Fathers
and Be Near Me) to the store. He
will be reading from the poems and sharing with us their influence on his own
works. Come and experience this perfect way to honour
Scotland’s most
enduring literary figure of the past in the company of one of the brightest
stars of contemporary Scottish fiction.
