Edinburgh residents are being warned by the Council not to fall victim to bogus telephone calls claiming that you can get a reduction in your Council Tax such as the banding in return for your bank details.
The scam has been reported by a number of residents who were telephoned by a bogus caller who claimed they could arrange a Council Tax refund.
The bogus caller then asked for bank details to allow immediate processing of the refund. They may mention they are calling from Leicester.
Residents are being reminded that the Council will only telephone Council Tax payers to discuss their account if requested to do so.
Any bogus calls received should be reported to the police, giving details of the time and date of the call.
Councillor Phil Wheeler, Convener of the Finance and Resources Committee, said: "Thankfully this scam has been brought to our attention and we are doing all we can to ensure that Council Tax payers and others are aware of the dangers of disclosing personal information to unsolicited callers over the phone."
