Nature, Edinburgh parks, and pets are the subjects of three Edinburgh amateur photography competitions with deadlines approaching.

All three competitions listed below are being organised in association with the City of Edinburgh Council. There are small prizes to be won and winning photographs will be publicly exhibited.

If you know of other Edinburgh-related photographic competitions, with prizes and spots in an exhibition, post details below.

Pentland Inspirations Art and Photographic competition

Pentland Inspirations Art and Photographic competition is aimed at encouraging people to explore the Pentland Hills Regional Park.

The Pentland Hills have been a source of inspiration for many people over the centuries including Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson who used Pentland places and characters in their work. This competition calls for you to capture the natural beauty of the area as either a painting, drawing, or photograph.

In 2008, 21 paintings and 141 photographs were entered into the competition.

  • Subject: Pentland Hills Regional Park or South Pentlands
  • Deadline: 22 October 2010
  • Prize: Prizes have been donated by Cicerone Press who publish guides for walkers, trekkers, mountaineers, climbers and cyclists. Everyone who enters will receive a voucher entitling them to 10% off up to three picture frames from Mount Parnassus Picture Framing at Mid Kinleith, Currie.
  • Exhibition: An exhibition formed from the competition will tour for five months throughout Edinburgh, the Lothians, Borders and South Lanarkshire.

Dogs Dinner Photographic Competition

Inspired by the Family Combinations exhibition currently on show at the City Art Centre, featuring images of US photographer William Wegman's family of Weimaraners, this contest is being run by the art gallery in conjunction with the Michelin award-winning Dogs restaurant in Edinburgh's Hanover Street.

The prize for the winning amateur photographer will be dinner for two at the Dogs, as well as the honour of having their photograph printed, framed and hung in the City Art Centre until the summer exhibitions close on 24 October, after which time they will be given the framed print to keep. They will also win free admission to the City Art Centre's summer exhibitions.

The judging panel for the competition comprises Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convenor; David Ramsden, owner of the Dogs restaurant; and Frank Little, City of Edinburgh Council Museums and Galleries Manager.
