The opening moves of the 116th Scottish Chess Championships will be taking place in the City Chambers, Edinburgh tomorrow lunchtime (Saturday 11 July).
The event which is running until July 19 is expected to be the strongest open chess event in the United Kingdom this year with 83 players due to take part.
Ten grandmasters and players from afar afield as India, Slovakia and Iceland have already signed up.
Lord Provost George Grubb said: "We're delighted to be hosting the championships and it's very fitting that Scotland's Capital is playing host to this prestigious event during the year of Homecoming Scotland.
"We look forward to these championships being one of the most successful ever and hope that people take the opportunity to watch one of the many games taking place in the City Chambers. It should be a truly fantastic spectacle."
