Director Peter Strickland (who made Silver Bear winning drama Katalin Varga) talks about why Berberian Sound Studio, a film about a soundtrack artist from the Seventies, was so appealing to him.
The gothic psychodrama has already garnered excellent reviews: Robbie Collin at The Telegraph called it "lip-smacking cinema, gamy and complex".
Catherine Shoard at The Guardian describes it as "a whip-crack 70s-set genre riff made by a cineaste for sympathetic souls".
Patrick Gamble at CineVue praises the lead performance by Toby Jones as the shy sound engineer as "incredibly watchable throughout."
EIFF artistic director Chris Fujiwara raved about it.
The final, climactic reel of the film appears to have divided opinions a tad, but if buzz is anything to go by then it looks like Berberian Sound Studio is the film to beat in the Michael Powell Award competition.
