About the Area

A former coal mining village, Gilmerton is to the South East of Edinburgh city centre, North of Edinburgh City Bypass. Liberton is to the West and Dander Hall is to the East of Gilmerton.

The area is famed for its series of shallow linked caves and passageways collectively called Gilmerton Cove. Various theories abound about what the subterranean network was used for, although none are conclusive.

It's been suggested that the Cove was used as a Covenanters' refuge, a smugglers' lair, and a link to a nearby Hellfire Club building.
