A very special place has been created at the Scottish Book Trust to host the latest production by award-winning Catherine Wheels theatre company, its first show aimed at children aged of 2 to 4 years old.
We are invited to enter the soft draped space that is home to Wrinkle and Cotton, the two gentle characters who live together, like old caring, sharing children. Everything is white – bird boxes, washing, knitting, their clothes and the fabulous wigwam made with great imagination using y-fronts, a hoodie top and other oddments, just the way a child would with whatever is around.
Every day, they maintain their small hushed world, keeping it clean and welcome and but with a daily inspection to ensure it is free of any colour. Any that are found are immediately dispatched to the bin. Their raison d’être is to nurture the white eggs that fall from the sky into their white aprons. They have nests within their own cosy nest and all is well until a red egg appears one day. Its arrival causes upset and means they have deal with change; face fear of the unknown and find the joy of surprises and the new.
The safe wee world changes but is no less safe. The newness is magically done on stage with the bird box interiors mysteriously changing colour apparently by magic! This is a delightfully absorbing play for wee ones and a salutary message for adults to keep an open mind for change.
White is part of the 2010 Made In Scotland project and the Traverse Festival Fringe programme and will be on tour across UK from September – November 2010
