About the Area
The Broughton area is to the North East of Edinburgh City Centre, West of Leith Walk and South of Pilrig.
Broughton's central location and the fact that it is on the edge of Edinburgh New Town, but without the housing costs of the New Town, has made it a vibrant area with a good number of pubs and restaurants particularly on Broughton Street.
Gayfield police station and Gayfield Square figures frequently in Edinburgh author Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus series.
An ancient feudal barony, Broughton can be roughly defined as the area between Leith Walk in the south east, Broughton Street in the south west, Broughton Road in the north west and McDonald Road in the north east.
