City Reads: SANTIAGO RONCAGLIOLO
6:30pm Thursday 15 April 2010
Edinburgh Central Library, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EG
City Reads is very proud to present a young Peruvian author Santiago Roncagliolo who was born in Lima, Peru in 1975, and has lived in Mexico, Spain and Peru, where he worked at the Human Rights Commission. That experience led him to write two books: the novel Red April; and the non-fiction The Fourth Sword, covering the Shining Path terrorist group. Roncagliolo was the youngest ever recipient of Spain’s Alfaguara Prize which he was awarded in 2006 for Red April, which has just been published in the UK in a stunning translation by Edith Grossman. He also wrote Pudor, which has been adapted into a major motion picture in Spain. Roncagliolo’s books have been translated into 13 languages in more than 30 countries, and his articles have appeared in several Hispanic newspapers and magazines. He has also translated authors such as Joyce Carol Oates and André Gide into Spanish. Come along and hear a literary giant at the start of his career. Chaired by writer and critic Alan Taylor.
The event is FREE and there will be complimentary drinks.
“Roncagliolo’s stunning debut, about the brutality of Peruvian society under the Fujimori regime, merits comparison to the work of J M Coetzee ... Roncagliolo crafts an unsparing view of life controlled by a repressive and paranoid government.” The Boston Globe
“A tour de force... Red April is at once a serial-killer thriller in the tradition of the Silence of the Lambs and a more searching examination of a country’s darker side.”
