In brief and in light of the opportunity to hear the great Ray Harryhausen in person (25th June at Cineworld) it seems appropriate to mention the recent passing of the late great Stan Winston who died this Sunday past.
Trainspotting fans like myself of special effects work, particularly in science fiction, horror and adventure films will know of Stan Winstons genius. He won four academy awards for his efforts over the years and created some of best known creature and mechanical effects around for films like Terminator 2: Judgement Day (the infamous metal endoskeleton), Aliens, Predator, The Thing and the Jurassic Park series.
It's remarkable that Ray Harryhausen who was creating pioneering effects work as far back as the 1940's (and created the still stunning skeleton army sequence in Jason and the Argonauts) has outlived a man whose career he would almost certainly have inspired. I take my hat hat off to and salute Stan Winston for the hours of extraordinary visual pleasure that has enhanced my cinema going days. I will toast him at tonight's party.
