Sighthill

About the Area

Sighthill is a suburb to the West of Edinburgh. With its busy Calder Road (one of the city's main arteries), car dealerships, and estate housing, it's a far cry from the picture-postcard image of central Edinburgh. Most passing through it, coming from the airport or joining the M8, will find little invitation to stop. The area has been changing.

Four high-rise towers - Broomview House, Glenalmond Court, Weir Court and Hermiston Court - that dominated the skyline for 50 years were demolished in 2008 to make way for new housing.

Sighthill has been connected to the new tramline in future and as part of the wider regeneration of the area there have been redevelopments at Napier University and Stevenson College in the area.

To the west of Sighthill is Bankhead Industrial estate, which contains Burton's biscuit factory, as well as a Royal Mail Mail Centre and two government buildings called Grayfield House and Saughton House.

At Bankhead avenue is one of Edinburgh's Community Recycling Centres.

Sighthill is bounded on the north-west by South Gyle, to the north by Wester Broom, to the east by Broomhouse and to the south by Wester Hailes and the Calders.
