Description

Murrayfield once again hosts a festive finale of the IRB Sevens World Series, following tournaments in Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Australia, Hong Kong and England. Over the two days 16 nations will compete in 44 games.

Since Murrayfield hosted the first Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament, in 1993, the game has continued to grow in popularity. Sevens will be played at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and was voted in last year for the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

Last season’s Edinburgh Sevens Plate winners Scotland have been handed a tough assignment in Pool D and face Pacific Islanders and renowned sevens specialists Samoa and Fiji, as well as Series regulars USA on day one, with their performances on the day determining their opponents in the knockout rounds the next day (Sunday).

Last season the Scots performed heroics on home soil, beating Fiji, Wales and the USA before trumping both South Africa and Argentina on day two to win the silver platter.

At the same time as the two-day tournament takes place, 84 teams will be engaged in the Festival of Rugby in the expansive playing fields outside Murrayfield stadium.
