Bennets in Leven street (not to be confused with Bennets of Morningside) is a historic, Victorian bar serving cask ales and home made, traditional food.

The saloon interior has changed little since 1906, from its original gantry with its four spirit casks, to the marble spittoon running the length of the bar.

It's a simple setting inside, with wooden floor and finishings throughout. The bar and bar stools are on one side and on the other side red leather benches and chairs at tables inlaid with Scottish maps.

As you sip on your 12 year-old malt (over 100 to choose from), you can admire the many period details of the interior: the recessed, mirrored arches that run opposite the bar; the (still operational) brass water taps; the detailed, hand-painted allegorical figures on tiles, decorative stained glass windows, including in the original jug and bottle department (for off-sales) with ornate hatch.

As well as a good selection of ales, the bar has reasonably priced food. Sometimes has music, and is a popular pre-theatre destination for those heading to the King's Theatre.
