Assembly Festival opens applications for 2019 Art Award

Assembly Festival, the multi-venue operator at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe founded in 1981, has announced the opening of applications for the 2019 Assembly Roxy Theatre (ART) Award.

The ART award, now in its third year, was introduced in 2017 to support new work by emerging Scottish and Scotland-based artists and companies wishing to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Each year it is presented by Assembly Festival to an independent theatre-maker or company based in Scotland when the winner receives support valued at over £5,500.

This support includes rehearsal space and use of Assembly Roxy as a performance space during the Edinburgh Festival with no minimum fee, press and marketing support and guidance, technical support, Fringe registration, dramaturgical support, mentorship, and guidance from the experienced Assembly Team.

Luke Holbrook, Assembly Roxy’s year-round Programmer said, “We are delighted to be able to offer continued support to Scottish artists and companies and I am really looking forward to seeing the work that is submitted for consideration. The ART Award ensures that new Scottish work is always included in Festival’s programme and given a platform in front of the world’s media during August.”

Previous winners include Jen McGregor for Heaven Burns (2018) and Andy Edwards & Amy Gilmartin for Scribble (2017).

Applications are now open and will close 12:00 noon, Monday 7 January.

In addition to the ART Award, Assembly recently announced a collaboration with HighTide to present Disruption: the future of new theatre, exclusively at Assembly Roxy in August. The season will be formed of nine shows in total, each piece demonstrating HighTide and Assembly's shared vision for new writing as a space for political, contemporary and provocative work, created by new, diverse artists. Further information on Disruption and how to apply can be found at https://www.assemblyfestival.com/who-we-are/perform-with-us/disruption. Deadline for applications to be part of Disruption is 4 Jan 2019.
