Edinburgh Fringe Festival 70th year celebrated at Summerhall with international programme

For this very special 2017 anniversary, Summerhall, Edinburgh’s acclaimed and award-winning multi-arts venue, has risen to the challenge of gathering a unique array of international creative responses to a changing world, that honours both the original spirit of the Edinburgh Festival and current cultural trends.

For its seventh year of Fringe involvement, Summerhall will again be working with many internationally acclaimed companies and producers bringing 140 new and returning shows to Edinburgh in 2017, including regular collaborators Northern Stage, Paines Plough, Big in Belgium, and Rose Bruford College.

International is the word as new strands for 2017 include a multinational programme of Middle Eastern theatre in the Arab Arts Focus season; Canada Hub in association with Aurora Nova, and seasons of work from Taiwan, Finland and Sri Lanka as well as shows from Made in Adelaide and the British Council Showcase

As a first, Army @ the Fringe in association with Summerhall brings a programme of plays at a working Army Reserve Centre in Edinburgh’s New Town, staffed by serving soldiers.

Add to this an eclectic mix of comedy, experimental opera dance photography and art exhibitions along with Summerhall’s year-round programme of live music Nothing Ever Happens Here (NEHH) that brings an eclectic mix of artists to Edinburgh throughout the month of August and you have a programme worth catching.

During 2016’s Fringe, Summerhall saw its hosted productions win more awards than ever before, including 10 Fringe Firsts awards (more than half of the 19 awarded throughout the Fringe for outstanding new writing) and four Total Theatre awards. At the time, chairman of the Fringe First judging panel and the Scotsman’s chief theatre critic Joyce McMillan, speaking to The Stage, commended the “real quality of artistic ambition” from Summerhall.

Summerhall will be open for fringe previews from Wednesday 2nd August 2017.
